GAME SUMMARY: DESERTCATS 130 BULLSNAKES 129
By Russell Gurule’
Sunday afternoon the Bullsnakes traveled to El Paso, Tx to take on the Southwest Desertcats to mark the final regular season game of this inaugural season. The Bullsnakes are fighting for a playoff spot and this would be one of those important games to help the cause.
The Bullsnakes over the past month have had several injuries which have shortened the roster considerably. The Bullsnakes would have only seven players dress out for this crucial game. Plenty of minutes and big contributions would be needed to overcome this late season adversity.
The game started with the Desertcats intent on getting redemption from the previous outing against the Bullsnakes in New Mexico. The Bullsnakes won that game convincingly with a full roster. This game would have different scenerios as the Bullsnakes would have to play with a short roster against the Desertcats full roster.
The 1st quarter would be several lead changes after the Desertcats jumped out to an early lead. The Bullsnakes were aided by Blake Mitchem’s two early 3-pointers which got the Bullsnakes going.
The contest went back in forth until the Bullsnakes were able to gain a small lead heading into half-time. Josh Holmes and Jared Fuller lead the way during the 2nd quarter before the half-time break.
Jordan Jones had many big time dunks to bring the Bullsnakes energy up. The 3rd quarter started with the Desertcats responding by taking the lead for most of the quarter. The contest turned into another back and forth change of leads and several ties.
The 4th quarter saw the Bullsnakes begin to gain a small lead which they held until close to the end of the game. Several plays went the Desertcats way which enabled them to have a chance to win at the end. With one minute to go, the Bullsnakes held onto a slim 5-point lead, several turnovers lead to baskets for the Desertcats. At the 6-second mark, Anthony Robinson of the Desertcats was able to hit a long three from the right side to give the Desertcats a 1-point lead which gave them the victory on their home court.
The loss was a heart breaker for the Bullsnakes which saw a 5-point lead evaporate at the end. Several big performances came from Brady Patterson and Mikal Monette. Seth Warfield also had some key plays.
The Bullsnakes now await a final decision on whether they will be entered into the ABA playoffs. It has been an incredible year for the Bullsnakes and a lot was accomplished for this first year franchise. We thank all our fans for your support! Big things are still to come for this group as the Bullsnakes look to become part of the fabric of the New Mexico sports community.
